Diarrhoea: ORS and Zinc
water_dropORS for every diarrhoea
Diarrhoea means 3 or more loose stools in a day. Give ORS after every loose stool. Mix one packet in 1 litre of clean drinking water. Use the made solution within 24 hours.
Show the mother how to prepare ORS - let her do it herself.
medicationZinc for 14 days
Give zinc for 14 days, even if diarrhoea stops earlier. Child 2-6 months: half tablet (10 mg) daily. Child 6 months to 5 years: 1 tablet (20 mg) daily. Dissolve in breast milk or water.
Zinc reduces the length of diarrhoea and prevents it in the next months.
restaurantContinue feeding
Continue breastfeeding and normal food during diarrhoea. Give more fluids. Do not stop food.
After diarrhoea, give one extra meal daily for 2 weeks.
warningWhen to refer
Refer if the child is very sleepy, cannot drink, has sunken eyes, skin pinch goes back very slowly, blood in stool, or diarrhoea for 14 days or more.
Handwashing with soap and clean water prevents diarrhoea.
