Care of bedridden patients (palliative care)
bedPrevent bed sores
Change the patient's position every 2 hours. Keep the skin clean and dry. Use soft padding under the back, hips and heels. Check the skin every day for red areas. Give enough food and water.
A red area that does not go away is the start of a bed sore. Tell the ANM.
medicationPain and comfort
Pain can be treated. Tell the MO if the patient has pain, breathlessness, vomiting or cannot sleep. Keep the mouth clean and moist. Help with toilet needs gently and keep the patient's dignity.
Palliative care is for the patient and the family.
favoriteSupport the family
Caring for a bedridden person is tiring. Teach the family how to turn the patient, clean and feed. Listen to their worries. Link them to the home-based palliative care team where available.
Your regular visit itself is a big support.
