Pregnancy registration and check-ups
assignmentRegister early
Register every pregnant woman as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, within the first 12 weeks. Fill the MCP (Mother and Child Protection) card and give it to her. She must bring this card to every visit.
Early registration = early care. Visit newly married women and ask about missed periods.
calendar_monthAt least 4 check-ups
Every pregnant woman needs at least 4 ante-natal check-ups (ANC). The first in the first 3 months. Also motivate her to attend the PMSMA check-up by a doctor on the 9th of every month in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
Keep a list of all pregnant women in your area and their next check-up date.
monitor_heartWhat is checked at ANC
Weight, blood pressure, haemoglobin (Hb), urine test, blood sugar, belly check for baby's growth, and blood tests for HIV and syphilis. Hb below 11 g/dl means anaemia.
BP 140/90 or more is high. Refer her to the doctor.
medicationTablets and injections
Folic acid in the first 3 months. From the 4th month: 1 IFA (iron) tablet daily for at least 180 days and 2 calcium tablets daily. One albendazole (deworming) tablet in the 2nd trimester. Td injection: 2 doses (or 1 booster if given in the last 3 years).
Take iron and calcium at different times. Iron tablet with lemon water is better absorbed; not with tea.
restaurantFood and rest
She should eat one extra meal every day: green leafy vegetables, pulses, milk, eggs or meat if she eats them, and fruits. She needs 2 hours of rest in the day and 8 hours of sleep at night. No tobacco or alcohol.
Talk to the whole family, not only to the woman.
