Dog bite and rabies

petsRabies kills - but can be prevented

Rabies spreads through the bite, scratch or lick on broken skin by an infected dog, cat, monkey or other animal. Once symptoms start, it is almost always fatal. Correct first aid and vaccine prevent it fully.

Remember

Never ignore any animal bite, even a small scratch.

clean_handsWash the wound at once

Wash the wound with soap and plenty of running water for 15 minutes. Then apply an antiseptic like povidone-iodine. Do not apply chilli, oil, turmeric or lime. Do not stitch or bandage tightly.

Remember

Washing well removes most of the virus.

vaccinesVaccine the same day

Send the person to the health centre the same day for anti-rabies vaccine (ARV). Complete all doses on the dates given. Deep bites or bites on the head, face or hands also need rabies immunoglobulin (RIG).

Remember

Vaccine is free in government facilities. Remind the person of every due date.
