Eye care

elderlyCataract

Cataract makes vision cloudy, mostly in older people. The black centre of the eye may look white or grey. Cataract surgery is free at government hospitals under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment.

A child who holds books very close, squints, sits close to the TV, or has watery eyes and headaches may need glasses. Refer for eye testing. A white spot in the pupil of a baby or crossed eyes also need referral.

Glasses for school children are given free under the school eye programme.

warningEye injury and red eye

If something enters the eye, wash it with plenty of clean water. Do not rub. Do not put kajal, oil, milk or any home remedy in the eye. Refer eye injuries, a painful red eye or sudden loss of vision at once.
