Anaemia Mukt Bharat

sickWhat is anaemia

Anaemia means low haemoglobin (Hb) in the blood. Signs: tiredness, weakness, breathlessness, dizziness, and pale eyes, tongue and nails. It reduces a child's ability to study and increases risk to mothers in pregnancy.

Remember

Hb below 12 g/dl in adolescent girls and non-pregnant women is anaemia; below 11 g/dl in pregnant women.

medicationWeekly iron tablet (WIFS)

Adolescents 10 to 19 years: 1 blue IFA tablet every week, the whole year, given in school or by you at the Anganwadi for out-of-school adolescents. Women of reproductive age (not pregnant or breastfeeding): 1 red IFA tablet every week. Deworming with albendazole twice a year (National Deworming Day).

Remember

Take the iron tablet after food to reduce stomach upset. Black stool is normal.

restaurantIron-rich food

Eat green leafy vegetables, pulses, sprouts, jaggery, dates, eggs, meat or fish. Eat vitamin C fruits like amla, guava or lemon with meals — it helps the body take up iron. Do not drink tea or coffee within 1 hour of meals.

Remember

Cooking in an iron kadai adds iron to food.

scienceTest, Treat, Talk (T3)

Help people get their Hb tested at T3 camps and at the health centre. People with anaemia are given treatment doses of iron. Severe anaemia (Hb below 7 g/dl) must be referred to the hospital.

Remember

Keep a list of anaemic girls and women and follow them up every month.
